It’s Just a Signature — Until It’s Not

Most people think notarization is just about signatures—until it’s too late.

It’s often only when we’re facing a medical emergency, a legal decision, or an unexpected loss that we realize how essential one notarized document can be. Whether it’s a Power of Attorney, a Living Will, or a Healthcare Surrogate form, that single signature can mean the difference between clarity and confusion—between peace and panic.

I’ve worked with families navigating everything from end-of-life decisions to major transitions in care. I’ve seen the stress that arises when documents aren’t signed, sealed, or properly prepared—and the relief that comes when everything is in place.

These aren’t just forms. They are tools that empower your loved ones to honor your wishes, protect your assets, and speak on your behalf when you may no longer be able to.

Key Documents That Often Require Notarization:

  • Power of Attorney – Grants someone authority to make decisions for you while you are still living.
  • Two things to know:
  1. It becomes invalid upon the signer’s death.
  2. The signer must be of sound mind and acting voluntarily.

As a notary, I am legally required to decline notarization if coercion or lack of understanding is suspected.

  • Advance Directives / Living Wills – Outline your healthcare preferences clearly and legally.
  • Healthcare Surrogate Designations – Assign someone to speak for you in medical decisions.
  • Guardianship or Custody Documents – Often necessary when caring for minors or vulnerable adults.

Before We Meet — What You’ll Need:

  • A current, valid photo ID (must be government-issued; acceptable forms include a driver’s license, passport, state ID, or military ID)
  • All signers present and willing – No one should be under pressure or unsure of what they’re signing
  • Any required witnesses – Especially for medical or estate-related documents

➤  Witnesses must not be named in the document or have any financial/personal interest

➤  I can often provide witnesses for an additional fee with advance notice

  • A complete document – All fields filled in except signature lines

➤  I cannot fill out legal documents or provide legal advice

A Note on Legal Boundaries

As a notary public, I cannot interpret or advise on documents. But once you know what needs to be signed, I ensure that it’s done right—with clarity, professionalism, and compassion.

Let’s take this important step before it becomes urgent.
