James & Helen: 72 Years of Devotion, Service, and Enduring Love

Part 12B of Two Become One: The Prelude to a Joy-Filled Marriage

What would it be like to spend over seven decades with the love of your life—and then realize you couldn’t live without them?

For James and Helen, married for an extraordinary 72 years, life was always better side by side. When Helen passed away at 91, James—95 years young—followed her just one day later. The Director at their Independent Living community said simply, “He couldn’t live without her.”

James and Helen’s love story began in the hopeful days after World War II. Both had served their country—he in uniform, she also as a veteran—and perhaps that shared calling to service was the spark that brought them together.

From their wedding day forward, they seemed to live out the words so many couples speak but few truly embody: “For better, for worse… in sickness and in health… to love and to cherish, until death do us part.”

Helen had developed dementia over a year ago, and James became her constant caregiver. They would walk together to the dining room each day, James keeping a watchful eye and a steadying hand. His protective presence was a vow made visible—decades after it had been spoken.

He was a private man, yet this past Memorial Day, James stood tall during a special recognition for veterans. He spoke not only of his own service but proudly of Helen’s as well. That moment, like so many in their life, was about both of them.

Their daughter, a physician living out of state, was by their side during Helen’s final days. She said goodbye to her mother, not knowing she would soon say goodbye to her father.

Even in those last weeks, James’s zest for life showed through. Just days before Helen’s passing, he struck up a conversation with a younger staff member about pocket knives, pulling out his own and demonstrating its many uses. It was a small exchange, but it revealed the man he had always been—engaged, curious, and eager to share what he knew.

Researchers call it the widowhood effect—when one spouse passes soon after the other. But no statistic can measure what James and Helen shared.

Their love was patient and kind (1 Corinthians 13:4), not envying or boasting, but protecting, trusting, hoping, and enduring through every season (1 Corinthians 13:7). It was the kind of love that grows deeper with time, because it is fed daily by choice—choosing to stay, to serve, and to see the best in each other.

Isn’t that the kind of love we all long for? A love that does not fade when the first blush of romance gives way to the quiet rhythm of everyday life. A love that remembers the joy of the wedding day but cherishes even more the thousands of ordinary days that follow.

James and Helen’s story reminds us: marriage is not just a promise made once—it’s a promise lived out again and again. And every day you keep it, that love becomes something more beautiful than the day before.

A vow renewal is more than a ceremony—it’s a chance to pause, remember, and say yes all over again. It’s about honoring your journey, celebrating your commitment, and creating new memories while cherishing the old.
